A total terpene percentage above 5% generally indicates a flavorful, aromatic cart. Anything below 1% and you're probably looking at a heavily processed distillate with added botanicals — not necessarily bad, but worth knowing.
Residual Solvents: The Section Nobody Reads (But Should)
During the extraction process, solvents like butane, propane, ethanol, or CO2 are used to pull cannabinoids and terpenes from the plant material. The question is how much of those solvents remain in the finished product.
The residual solvents panel shows exactly that. Each solvent has a legal action limit set by state regulators — if any reading exceeds that limit, the product should not be on shelves. Look for a "pass" designation next to each listed solvent. If you see a "fail" or any number flagged in red, walk away.
This section also tells you something about the extraction method. Products tested with CO2 as the primary solvent often come with cleaner residual profiles. Heavy solvent presence — even within legal limits — can affect flavor and throat feel.
Pesticides, Heavy Metals, and Microbials: The Safety Trifecta
Beyond what's intentionally in the cart, a full COA will also test for things that shouldn't be there at all.
Pesticide testing checks for agricultural chemicals that may have been used during cultivation. Cannabis plants are known to be efficient bioaccumulators, meaning they pull compounds from their environment readily — including things you don't want to inhale. A clean pesticide panel should show non-detected (ND) results across the board, or readings well below action limits.
Heavy metals testing screens for lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury. These can enter the product through contaminated soil, water, or even through certain types of hardware used in the cart itself. Again, ND is ideal. Any detection above trace limits is a red flag.
Microbial testing looks for harmful bacteria, mold, and yeast. This matters more for flower and edibles than for oil-based carts, but a thorough lab will still run it. A pass here means the product was handled and stored properly through the production chain.
How to Spot a Sketchy or Outdated COA
Not all lab reports are created equal. Here are a few signs that something's off:
- The test date is old. A COA from two years ago doesn't reflect the current batch. Look for testing that's recent — ideally within the past six to twelve months for that specific production lot.
- The lab isn't accredited. Legitimate labs carry ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation or operate under state licensing requirements. If you can't verify the lab with a quick search, be skeptical.
- The report is missing panels. A COA that only shows cannabinoids and skips residual solvents, pesticides, or heavy metals isn't a full picture. Brands that only share partial results are often hiding something.
- Batch numbers don't match. The COA should reference the same batch number as the product you're holding. Mismatches suggest the report may not apply to what you actually bought.
