You hold your cart up to the light. Oil is clearly in there — you can see it pooled at the bottom, maybe halfway up the chamber. You take a draw, and… nothing. Or worse, a thin, flavorless wisp that barely registers. What gives?

This is one of the most common complaints among vape cart users, and it's got a name in the community: the ghost hit. You're pulling, the battery is firing, oil is present — but your session feels like a whole lot of nothing. The good news? This problem is almost always diagnosable and, in many cases, fixable. Let's walk through every likely cause, from the most obvious to the ones most people overlook.

Airflow Is the First Place to Look

Before you blame the oil or the battery, check your airflow path. Carts are precision-engineered with tiny channels designed to move air from the mouthpiece, past the coil, and into your lungs. When those channels get even partially blocked — by residue buildup, condensation, or a manufacturing defect — your draw resistance goes through the roof and vapor production tanks.

The fix here is often simpler than you'd expect. Use a thin toothpick or a straightened paperclip to gently clear the mouthpiece opening. Don't jam anything into the center airhole too aggressively, but a light pass around the rim can dislodge dried residue that's choking the flow. Alternatively, try drawing without activating the battery — just a dry pull — to feel whether air is moving freely. If it feels like sucking through a clogged straw, you've found your problem.

Viscosity Changes Can Strand Your Oil

Cannabis oil isn't a static substance. Its thickness changes with temperature, and if your cart has been stored somewhere cold — a car in winter, a bag left near an air conditioning vent, or just a cool drawer — the oil can thicken to the point where it won't wick properly to the coil.

The coil needs oil to be in contact with it to produce vapor. When the oil is too thick, it pools at the bottom and the coil fires dry, which gives you that ghost hit sensation — heat, maybe a faint smell, but no real vapor. The fix is gentle warming. Hold the cart in your palm for a few minutes. You can also set it in a warm (not hot) environment for 10 to 15 minutes. Some folks briefly wave a hair dryer on low heat near the cart from a few inches away. Once the oil loosens up and wicks back to the coil, your hits should return to normal.

Your Battery Voltage Might Be the Real Culprit

This is the one people miss most often. Your cart might be perfectly fine — the issue is that your battery isn't delivering enough voltage to actually vaporize the oil at the rate you're expecting.

Most 510-thread batteries have adjustable voltage settings, typically ranging from around 2.4V to 4.0V. Thicker distillate oils and live resin formulations generally need higher voltage to vaporize efficiently. If your battery is set too low, the coil heats up but doesn't get hot enough to convert the oil into a meaningful cloud. Try bumping the voltage up a notch and see if your hit improves. On the flip side, if it was already set high and you're getting a harsh, almost burnt taste alongside weak vapor, you may have a coil that's been damaged from running too hot — and that's a different problem entirely.

Also worth checking: is your battery actually charged? A battery sitting at 20% charge can still power the indicator light and feel like it's working, but it may not be delivering consistent voltage to the coil. Plug it in, give it a full charge, and try again.

The Coil Could Be Burnt or Flooded

Coils have a lifespan. If yours has been running for a while, especially at higher temps, the wick material inside can degrade. A burnt coil produces weak, off-tasting vapor — sometimes so faint you'd swear the cart was empty. There's not much you can do to repair a genuinely burnt coil, but you can confirm it by smell. If your hit tastes acrid or like scorched material, the coil is likely done.

On the opposite end, a flooded coil happens when oil has seeped into the coil chamber faster than it can be vaporized — often from storing the cart on its side or in warm conditions that made the oil too runny. In this case, try a few short, gentle puffs without inhaling deeply to clear the excess oil. Some people do a light dry pull while covering the airhole with a finger, which can help draw pooled oil back up through the wick.

Cart and Battery Compatibility Matters More Than You Think

Not all 510-thread carts are created equal, and not all batteries are designed to work optimally with every cart formulation. Some carts use ceramic coils that require a specific voltage range to perform well. Others use cotton wicks that respond differently to temperature. If you recently switched to a new cart brand or oil type and the hits suddenly went flat, your battery might simply not be calibrated for that cart's specs.

Check whether the cart manufacturer has a recommended voltage range — many brands publish this information. If your battery doesn't reach that range, or only hits that range at its absolute max setting, you might need a more powerful or adjustable battery to get the most out of that particular product.

More often than not, it's a fixable combination of temperature, voltage, airflow, or coil condition. Taking five minutes to diagnose the actual cause can save you from tossing out a cart that's still got plenty of life left in it.
